September ’09 was the start of a long termed planned project to introduce basic horticultural skills and sustainability within the school curriculum. To enrich our gardening we have an outdoor classroom, an orchard and a polytunnel. The students have developed and maintained the 12 vegetable plots, producing many crops including potatoes, tomatoes and green beans. These vegetables have been served as part of the school lunches. Our latest enterprise is to make and sell Green tomato chutney. Eco-WarriorsThe Eco-school project is a whole school concept, which is driven by the Eco-committee. The Eco-committee has representatives from all areas of the school, which encourages the ethos that we are all working to one goal. The students feel part of a team, working together for a good cause. Being an Eco-warrior encourages the students to think on a global dimension and become aware of issues outside their own experience. We have had support from the Liverpool World Centre; Sandy Carter has visited school and run a workshop. The Park Rangers have run practical workshops, bird feeders etc. The students have been involved with a project with The school has had successful recycling and “turn it off” campaigns. Our current focus is on the School grounds which started with the building of our new outdoor classroom The committee of students, staff and a governor have encouraged recycling and energy saving measures throughout the school. We were successful in achieving our first Green flag in March ’09 and we are working towards our next Green flag through the continued development of our vegetable garden and outdoor space. Students are encouraged to suggest items for the garden and, recently we have had benches installed to increase sociable areas |
