Alder Hey Hospital Education

Neurological Rehabilitation Unit

The unit is situated within the neurology ward and  provides a therapeutic environment for children and young people aged from 4 to 16, catering for all abilities from The Engagement Model to GCSE. Children are taught in small groups or individually dependent upon their needs and follow national curriculum targets, where appropriate. Pupils with severe impairment to their cognitive functioning caused by an acquired brain injury, follow a sensory-based curriculum (Engagement Model).

Referral
Neurological  patients are referred by the Head Injury Team for assessment, education, and rehabilitation, following a neurological episode or acquired brain injury. Their length of stay depends on the severity of the brain injury and the time taken for cognitive and physical recovery to take place.

The unit teacher works closely with the  Head Injury Rehabilitation Team.
