Alder Hey Arts & Enrichment

Picture
The Trust Arts for Health programme has previously offered a wide range of interactive arts’ activities, delivered by professional artists, to engage patients and support their wellbeing and recovery. Organisations involved include the Tate Liverpool, Twin Vision, and the Comedy Trust. Activities include dance, music, comedy, animation, digital art and storytelling. Teachers collaborated with the visiting artists to arrange and support the activities and projects for pupils  in the ward classroom areas.

SLiCE PROJECT

From April to July 2018, Alder Hey Hospital School had the opportunity to work in partnership with Sandfield Park School and the highly acclaimed Curious Minds SLiCE (Specialist Leaders in Cultural Education) Fellowship programme with SLiCE Fellow, Sarah Spoor, SLiCE cultural partner Sarah Han and the National Museums Liverpool on an amazing project, to support cultural education - 'the world through ‘my eyes’.
Alliance schools including the Alder Hey Hospital School, Alder Centre for Education, Dewi Jones Unit and the Champions from Bankview High School and Sandfield Park School worked together to create one strand of the programme. ‘Through my Eyes’ project gave pupils the opportunity to work with photographer, Leila Romaya from Stray Cat Media, which then culminated in an exhibition of photographic work. This was then accompanied by sound tracks produced by our students.  To achieve this, the pupils worked with a musician and composer, James Taylor from Lyons Music to produce a sound scape, which formed part of an installation that featured at National Museums Liverpool MLK building.
Our pupils were lucky enough to attend the exhibition and some even gave a short presentation explaining the idea behind their photograph. They received a certificate for their hard work, which was presented to them by the leaders of the project on the day and had the opportunity to apply for an Art's Mark qualification.

Other projects

There are a number of other projects that have taken place previously at Alder Hey:
  • Author visit - Cressida Cowell visited the Oncology ward to meet patients and families and led a workshop for all in the hospital atrium as part of the Readathon in March 2020. (this was through Read for Good and Alder Hey Arts)
  • Comic Youth Workshops
  • Medical Mavericks film project with Twin Vision - patients across the wards took part
  • Dada Fest project - this provided patients with the opportunity to participate in one-to-one arts and music activities for 20 hours. This involved projects with artists and musicians across a range of genre.
  • Pencil Pals have worked with pupils on Dialysis
